#1: External Hard Drive Not Showing Up – Check Power Connection
If your system isn’t able to recognize the hard disk drive, then try connecting with another cable or using different USB port to check for faulty connection. The appearance of light on the HDD will mean that there is power in the connection, confirming it is fine.
If the drive is working on another USB port, it means that the faulty USB port needs to be fixed.
However, if the hard drive doesn’t show any connection with another USB port, it might be the issue with the connecting cable, which needs replacement.
If the USB ports are working fine, then there might be some problem with the USB drivers and needs to be updated. Open Run dialog box using Windows + R keys. Type devmgmt.msc command and press OK to open Device Manager.
Click Disk Drives to view the connected external USB drive
Select and Right click on the drive to go to Properties
From the Properties dialog box that appears, click on Update Driver button and follow further instructions as they prompt.
#3. Change the Drive Letter
During the initialization of external hard drive, Windows automatically assigns a Letter to the Drive.
Changing this pre-assigned drive letter can help reset the communication between the drive and the computer, and help Window recognize it. Follow these steps to do it :
Right Click This PC and select Manage
Form the Computer Management dialog box the opens, select Disk Management
From the list of connected external hard disk drives, choose desired hard drive and Right-click to Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Click Add, assign a new drive letter from the drop-down list, and press OK.
The external hard drive will temporarily disconnect and appear with the new drive letter (just applied) when reconnected.
#4 : Scan and Repair the External Hard drive
If the external hard drive is connected but isn’t showing in the file browser, then there may signs of corrupt system files. These might not be the signs of major hard disk failure and can be fixed using system inbuilt tools.
You can scan your machine using Windows built-in utility CHKDSK for checking and repairing any file system errors on the external hard disk drive.
Open Command Prompt from the Start Menu. Choose Run as Administrator
type chkdsk *: /r and press Enter to scan, repair, and recover any corrupted files on the device. (replace * with the Drive Letter that needs scanning and repairing)
#5 : Format External Hard Drive to NTFS
To make your external hard drive compatible with other systems, you need to format it to NTFS
Important : First create a backup of your external hard drive data before starting the process. This is because formatting the drive will erase all data stored on it.
Right click This PC and press Manage to open Computer Management dialog box
Choose Disk Management to search all connected external hard drives
Choose the desired external hard drive, right click and press Format
Choose NTFS as the file system and follow further instructions to complete the process.
